The company’s base is a purpose-built facility that contains a state of the art laboratory, bulk powder and liquid blending areas and a bottling plant that specialises in 50ml miniatures. Our staff all hold recognised food handling qualifications and have approved DG handlers on site at all times.

The Quality Assurance section checks and approves all raw materials, processes and products and issues QA Compliance Certificates for every product. We have technical expertise and practical knowledge that ensures our customers receive the best product at prices that are very profitable to them. Our technical staff hold tertiary qualifications and continue practical industry run forum and workshops to keep study current with innovation in the beverage field. To top it all off, we have a strong team culture that ensures every customer receives personal attention and support is always available.

Qualifications and Warranty

Our premises are licensed under Customs as a Manufacturing Premises allowing spirit production and blending free of excise tax. We are also Ministry of Primary Industries registered, Environmental Protection Agency Approved and Audited by NZG Asure Qual programme. All our raw materials are produced on site or sourced from approved manufacturers worldwide and meet EC, USFDA, or BP standards. Each product is manufactured to ANZFSA regulations and a Quality Assurance certificate is issued.

Years of experience

Over the past decade our projects and products have included production of malt whisky exported to France, technical assistance with the Broken Shed and Stolen brands and a major supplier for the Warrior brand of Rum. We have ongoing R&D projects for production of special vodkas from root crops including kumara and parsnip, waste fruit and grain.

Southern Distilling and Hauraki Beverage have supplied customers internationally, which include Australia, Asia, USA and the UK. We also have strong ties to supplying the Pacific Islands. We have supplied ingredients for spirits, beers, sports drinks and RTD’s.

Meet Our Team

Peter Wheeler Director, Chemist and Flavour Mixologist
Educated at Mt Albert grammar School, Peter completed tertiary qualifications in Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Initially working as a research technician at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research he continued in science based positions with some of NZ’s largest companies including NZ Forest Products, Cropper NRM and Watties. A move into technical sales with Watties involved export experience in territories as diverse as Iraq and Peru. As Export Manager for NZ Sugar every Pacific run country was visited and he gained a deep understanding of the benefits for local manufacture backed by experienced technical support.

As a brewer, winemaker and distiller for over 40 years this experience was key in founding Spirits Unlimited the inventor and developers of craft distilling systems now seen world wide. Commercially the companys Southern Distillling division produced Malt Whiskies (90% exported) and the Coaster Pure Malt is now one of the rarest whiskeys available.

With family origins in brewing stretching back 150 years The Wheeler family as roots in the Nailsworth Brewery (UK Costswalds) through to management of todays Lion Group Breweries.

So brewing is in the blood.

Technicians fully trained in product development, analysis and quality control.

They carry out test brewing, distilling and food ingredient product development plus providing testing and advisory service to customers.

Key personal have tertiary training in industry including Massey University Brewing course.

Their experience in beverages covers diverse products from slushie mixes to natural fruit toppings and Dry London Gin.
